Industry: Residential - Interior Design & Architecture

For: Chris Dyson Architects

I worked on a refurbishment and extension of the existing Grade II listed Victorian property at Belsize Lane. Currently, the property is in a state of disrepair. Chris Dyson Architects is proposing a two story lightweight extension on the rear, creating new living spaces between the outrigger buildings, while maintaining the legibility of the old with a lightweight infill, to provide a better connection with the garden, existing staircase and to bring more light into the new living spaces. This will be achieved by adapting the rear wall and windows on the ground and lower ground and adding an unobtrusive glass extension. I helped design the space, in which our intervention is intended to update the property for it’s owners, to enhance the value and enjoyment of the property and to improve the layout and energy efficiency of the building. I helped prepare four major client facing presentations and I also drew plans, sections, details, collages and elevations of the existing and proposed scheme. I incorporated work from the heritage consultant, client’s lighting consultant and energy consultant and in house visualization team.

I then independently wrote and prepared a comprehensive Design and Access Statement, and all associated drawings for submission to Planning. I found a library precedents by surveying planning maps for precedents of Grade I and II Listed two story extensions in Islington, Camden and Kensington boroughs. I also analyzed the Pre-application submission and crafted responses to Planning. The aim of the document was to demonstrate that proposed works will enhance the existing buildings, and will improve the overall appearance and useability of the application site as well as its siting within Belsize Lane and the wider Belsize Conservation Area. The proposal positively responds to its context and its considerate to the surrounding properties. Work and drafts were overseen and reviewed by the Consultant Partner and Client.

Selections from the Design & Access Statement and Technical Drawings

I worked on plans, elevations, sections and details, under the supervision of the Consultant partner. I completed a detailed analysis that compares the existing and proposed scheme, illustrating that our intervention is sensitive and restores the Victorian intent of the property.
