Inside/Out @ The Serpentine Pavilion

I recently had the privilege of leading the organization of the final lecture at the Serpentine Pavilion featuring this year's designer, Lina Ghotmeh. The experience was not only a testament to the power of collaboration but also a celebration of cultural heritage and the importance of communal spaces in shaping our collective future.

The process of orchestrating this event was a multifaceted endeavour that required meticulous planning, effective communication, and seamless coordination. We liaised with the Dean, Head of Programme, Architecture Firm, and Serpentine Pavilion, every aspect was carefully executed to ensure its success. One of the pivotal tasks involved proposing and pitching the budget with the University, which underwent several rounds of review and funding. This aspect was crucial in securing the necessary resources to bring the vision to life and ensure a memorable experience for all attendees.

Central to the evening was the inspiring theme of the Pavilion itself – "À table." Drawing from Lina Ghotmeh's Mediterranean heritage and the rich tradition of gathering around a table for nourishment and conversation, the Pavilion served as a metaphorical invitation to come together and engage in dialogue. The design of the Pavilion, featuring a concentric table along the perimeter, symbolized the act of communal gathering and sharing. This concept was inspired by togunas, structures for community gatherings in Mali, where the low ceilings encourage people to sit rather than stand, fostering a sense of intimacy and connection.Beyond its architectural significance, the Pavilion embodied a deeper ethos of inclusivity and collaboration. It served as a reminder of the importance of creating spaces where diverse voices can come together to exchange ideas, challenge perspectives, and ultimately envision a shared future.

I am reminded of the profound impact that architecture can have on fostering community and facilitating meaningful interactions. It is through spaces like the Serpentine Pavilion that we have the opportunity to transcend boundaries, bridge divides, and collectively shape a more inclusive and equitable world. The final lecture at the Serpentine Pavilion was not just an event but a testament to the power of design to inspire dialogue, foster connections, and ignite change. It was a reminder of the transformative potential of architecture in creating spaces that reflect our values, celebrate our diversity, and unite us in a common purpose.
