The art museum extension responds to the existing museum in a language of opposites - there are vast, open spaces in response to the existing condition of long and narrow exhibition spaces. These large volumes of space could accommodate contemporary art of different medium and scales, but the spaces are most suited for large scale, destination, art installations.

The interior is defined by daylight and proportion, while solid materials characterize the exterior. The plans of the original museum determine the organization of the rooms in the extension. Curved walls that are pulled from the proportions of the old museum plan to create spaces and light wells for soft light and soft spaces
